This wood frame residence is sited on a 1-½ acre parcel in an established rural neighborhood. The structure is tucked in to the North West corner of the roughly square parcel allowing expansive views of a meadow on the South and East of the property. The building form addresses this view with a 2 story glass corner that brings light deep into the house while focusing view to the bucolic setting.
The somewhat agrarian form echoes many of the barns and farms throughout the area. The simple exterior gives way to a very open light plan upon entering. The 2 story foyer is bathed in light with multiple small square south facing windows creating a kaleidoscope of sunlight throughout the day. A long entry axis perpendicular to the main form brings you into the center of the home, which is an open space consisting of the kitchen, dining room, living room and attached screened porch. Each space is delineated with different ceiling treatments, identifying them individually without losing the feeling of unity between them. The master loft is an open space on the second floor with a private bath and interior balcony that looks over the living room below and the meadow beyond.
Exterior treatment of materials looks to the simple Midwestern farm structures of the area. Vertical tongue and groove cedar with a transparent stain, a forest green roof, and galvanized metal spouting give this building a soft, weather worn feel that lends a sense of permanence to a newly built house.
