This renovation and expansion of the MetroParks, Serving Summit County FA Seiberling Nature Center demanded a collaborative multi-disciplinary approach led by Peninsula Architects. Seeking LEED Platinum Certification, the design team worked to integrate the building, site and exhibits so that the Parks’ message of conservation and education rings clear. The 8000 s.f. existing subterranean structure is being renovated and added to, housing exhibit space, program space for 100, live animal display, work space and administrative offices.
A choreographed path starting at the new entry pavilion takes the visitor through created wetlands, a native forest, and through the building to a tranquil new exterior program space overlooking a pond. The design team sought every opportunity to emphasize sustainability in the design of the site, systems and material specifications. All sustainable building and site components are interpreted in the exhibit space in real time, allowing the visitor to understand how the building and site are working together.
With a roll up your sleeves design approach, Peninsula Architects worked with MetroParks, Serving Summit County to build public support for the project and convince regular visitors and neighboring property owners that this renovation would enhance their experience of the site.
