Morning Star Café
BATH, OHIO, USA
Designed in collaboration with AVID Architects, Morning Star Café reimagines the contemporary café as a place for presence, conversation, and shared experience. Inspired by the character of European cafés, the design intentionally resists the increasingly ubiquitous culture of screens and remote work, creating instead an environment that encourages guests to disconnect, linger, and connect with one another.
The spatial concept is organized around an open preparation kitchen conceived as both culinary studio and performance stage. Positioned at the center of the café and wrapped by the retail counter, this active workspace makes the craft of baking visible, immersing visitors in the sights, aromas, and choreography of the culinary process.
A series of smaller, distinct seating environments radiates from this central core, transforming a large open volume into an intimate collection of rooms and gathering spaces. Deep, saturated colors, rich materials, and layered textures create a sense of warmth and familiarity while giving the café an atmosphere that feels transportive—less like a typical neighborhood coffee shop and more like the discovery of a memorable café encountered while traveling. The result is an immersive environment designed to reward lingering and make the simple act of sharing coffee and conversation feel like an occasion.
