Liberty Park Nature Center Immerses Visitors in Nature

Life-size scenery displays and animals lend a touch of realism to this $3MIL educational facility

Twinsburg, OH – On May 21, 2015, Summit Metro Parks opened the new Liberty Park Nature Center at 9999 Liberty Road, Twinsburg, Ohio. Designed by Peninsula Architects, the 3,900 square foot facility includes a picnic shelter designed to resemble an old barn, an outdoor amphitheater, and a campfire area with an “uncomfortable couch” made of sandstone.

Indoor and outdoor exhibits – including a 6-foot-tall epoxy resin black bear standing upright on its rear legs – are supplemented by two new hiking trails that give visitors hands-on experience with the park’s moss-covered sandstone cliffs, boulders, woods and wetlands. Rounding out the educational offering are park naturalists who host school and youth groups for day and evening programs.

Of the mission for this environmentally-friendly building (there’s an open-air plaza surrounded by drainage ponds to handle storm water), Twinsburg Mayor Katherine Procop said, “It is another way that Summit Metro Parks is providing educational experiences for our region, in a close-up environment that we have not experienced here [in Twinsburg].”

At 40 percent the size of the Seiberling Nature Realm, the park district’s first nature center on Smith Road in northwest Akron, Liberty Park Nature Center successfully establishes an intimacy with the great outdoors while expanding public awareness of environmental concerns.

Today, the 3,000-acre Liberty Park harbors countless rare and endangered species along with rock ledges and wetlands within the conservation area.  In 2006, Liberty Park was designated as an Important Bird Area by the Audubon Society.
