Akron Rotary Camp
for Children with
Special Needs

AKRON, OHIO

The Akron Rotary Camp for Children with Special Needs, in cooperation with the Akron Area YMCA, offers children and adults with disabilities the opportunity to experience all the friendship, fun and excitement of camp. Located on Rex Lake in the Portage Lakes, the camp has been in operation since 1924.

Developed from a comprehensive master plan, which became the centerpiece of a $5.0 million capital campaign, Peninsula Architects worked closely with staff, counselors and campers to create a place that is uniquely fitted to the campers and provides all the ingredients of the classic summer camp experience.

The project includes detached cabins, a central bath house, recreation hall and dining facilities. Overlooking the lake, the 10,000 square-foot Recreation Hall is the centerpiece of the camp, providing a large recreation area, conference space, a health center, staff offices, a multi-sensory room, an animal room to house reptiles, and a resource room.
